In this personal and reflective talk, Jennifer shares the story of how serious illness transformed the trajectory of her life. After years of navigating debilitating autoimmune disease and a diagnosis of Stage III breast cancer, Jenn found herself searching not only for medical solutions, but for a deeper understanding of what supports true healing and resilience.
Through her journey—and the support she received from North of Boston Cancer Resources—Jenn began exploring the role of the nervous system, awareness, and what many traditions call the energy body. What she discovered reshaped how she understands health, learning, and the human capacity to adapt and grow.
Blending lived experience with insights from neuroscience and contemplative practice, Jenn offers reflections on how shifting from controlling the body to listening to it can open unexpected pathways for healing.
Her story ultimately points to a hopeful truth: when we learn to care for our inner state, we expand our capacity to heal, to live fully, and to serve others.
Participants affected by cancer living in the North of Boston area are eligible to receive a gift certificate that may be redeemed for services like massage, acupuncture, reiki, yoga therapy, nutrition counseling, health coaching, and more!
Jennifer Bates is the founder of The Centered Scholar, where she works with adolescents and educators at the intersection of neuroscience, mindfulness, and learning. As a learning specialist and mindfulness teacher, Jenn helps students and teachers develop awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience by understanding how the brain and nervous system shape our ability to learn and grow.
Jenn’s professional path took an unexpected turn when her physical body began to break down from severe autoimmune illness, followed by a diagnosis of Stage III breast cancer. Trained in science, Jenn initially approached healing by trying to fix the physical body. Over time, that search led her toward a deeper understanding of the nervous system and energy body, and to the supportive community at North of Boston Cancer Resource.
That journey inward profoundly reshaped Jenn’s life and work. Today, the insights she gained inform everything she does—helping others cultivate resilience, regulate their nervous systems, and reconnect with their inner resources for healing and growth.
